New Metro Mass Buses Will Improve — Veep

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has stated that the introduction of 100 brand-new buses for Metro Mass Transit Limited will greatly improve safety, comfort and efficiency within Ghana’s public transport system.
The buses, which form part of a total consignment of 300 new 29-seater vehicles expected to be added to the Metro Mass fleet, were officially commissioned during a ceremony held at the company’s head office.
Addressing officials, transport operators and invited guests at the event, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang described the initiative as a major step towards modernising Ghana’s transport sector and improving mobility for citizens across the country.
According to the Vice President, an effective and reliable transportation system remains one of the key foundations for national development and economic growth.
She explained that efficient transport services help facilitate the movement of people, goods and services, thereby supporting productivity, commerce and social activities nationwide.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that the deployment of the new buses will help reduce the public’s dependence on unsafe, unreliable and expensive transport options currently used in some parts of the country.
She added that the expansion of the Metro Mass fleet will also enable the company to extend its services to more communities and improve access to affordable public transportation for many Ghanaians.
The Vice President stressed that the arrival of the buses would significantly increase passenger capacity, reduce pressure on commuters and provide a more comfortable and dignified travel experience for passengers.
According to her, the buses have been designed with improved safety and comfort features to ensure passengers enjoy safer journeys while transport operators maintain higher operational standards.
She further disclosed that the buses are fuel-efficient and expected to help reduce operational costs while promoting environmentally responsible transport services.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said government remains committed to strengthening the transport sector through strategic investments aimed at improving the quality and reliability of public transportation services across the country.
The Vice President also used the occasion to advocate for greater local participation in future vehicle procurements and manufacturing processes.
She stressed the importance of building Ghana’s capacity in the production and assembly of vehicle parts, saying the country must gradually position itself to benefit more from industrialisation opportunities within the transport sector.
“My hope is that as we move forward, at least in Ghana, we will be able to produce one or two of the parts that come together to form the bus,” she stated.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang further urged management of Metro Mass Transit Limited to ensure that the investment made by government is protected through efficient scheduling, professional driving practices and a strong maintenance culture.
According to her, maintaining the buses properly will guarantee sustainability, improve service delivery and ensure long-term benefits for commuters.
She also revealed that all operational processes required for the immediate deployment of the buses, including registration, licensing, insurance, inspection and branding, had already been completed.
The newly commissioned buses are therefore expected to begin operations immediately to support public transport services across various parts of the country.
