Police Arrest Suspect in Murder of UCC Student

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39 year old man in connection with the murder of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a Level 200 student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC). Her body was discovered at Hutchland Beach in Cape Coast under circumstances police are still investigating.

The suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, was arrested at the Pedu Lorry Station. Police say the arrest followed sustained intelligence led operations carried out by the Inspector General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team.

According to preliminary investigations, on June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 p.m., Mensah allegedly picked up Innocentia from Ayensu Plaza near her hostel enclave. Investigators believe he transported her to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen alive.

Days later, her body was found at the beach, sparking widespread concern among students, relatives, and the public. Police say the suspect, who claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, is now assisting with investigations.

Reports indicate that before leaving her hostel, Innocentia had called one of her roommates to say she was going out to meet an acquaintance. She left dressed in casual clothing but never returned, prompting worry among her friends and family.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that the case is receiving full attention. Officials say investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding her death. They have promised that further updates will be provided as the probe continues.

Police emphasized that the suspect remains in custody and will face the law if found culpable. The Service also reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice and protecting students across the country.

The tragic incident has raised fresh concerns about student safety and security in Cape Coast and other university towns. Parents and guardians have expressed alarm, urging authorities to strengthen measures to protect young people from harm.

Education stakeholders say the case highlights the need for stronger collaboration between schools, communities, and law enforcement agencies to safeguard students. They argue that swift investigations and accountability are critical to restoring public confidence.

Meanwhile, student groups at UCC have called for calm but demanded justice for Innocentia. They say the incident has left many students fearful and stressed, especially those living in hostels outside campus.

The police have urged the public to remain patient and allow due process to take its course. They insist that every effort is being made to uncover the truth and bring closure to the family of the deceased.

For now, the arrest of Michael Mensah marks a major step in the investigation, but authorities say more work is needed to fully understand what happened on the night Innocentia disappeared.
