NHIA to Register 20 Million New Members by End of 2025
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has set an ambitious target to register 20 million new members by the end of 2025. This was disclosed by the NHIA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, during a courtesy visit to the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on November 5, 2025.
Dr. Bampoe provided an update on the scheme’s administration, stating, “Everything is running smoothly. Payment is made promptly. By the end of this year, we might register a record 20 million people, but we are confronted with a challenge.” He identified the issue of co-payment and the imposition of unauthorised fees on NHIS members as a significant setback, emphasizing, “We want to put an end to that, and we seek the prayers of Otumfuo to be able to do that.”
In response, the King challenged the NHIA management and Board to implement the necessary reforms to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the health insurance scheme.
He said, “Health is key to national development, and that was why the NHIA was established so that citizens can enjoy free health care. I’m glad to hear you now pay promptly. Put in place the needed measures to make it effective.”
The Monarch further advised engagement with key stakeholders along the healthcare value chain—including health facilities, pharmacies, and health personnel—to promote honesty and accountability. He highlighted challenges such as cost escalation, poor monitoring, limited client education, and weak community involvement, which contribute to ongoing concerns.
Finally, Otumfuo urged NHIA to intensify public sensitization on avoiding out-of-pocket payments at accredited health facilities to uphold the scheme’s benefits for all Ghanaians.
