GJA condemns assault on journalist

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has condemned the assault on two journalists who covered the parliamentary election rerun in Ablekuma North on Friday, July 11.

GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor described the attack as “brutal and unprovoked,” expressing disappointment that the incident marred what should have been a celebratory day for the Association, which had just sworn in its newly elected national executives.

According to the GJA, Kwabena Agyekum Banahene of the EIB Network (GHOne TV) was slapped by a uniformed police officer, while JoyNews reporter Salomey Martey was also assaulted by an unidentified thug at the same polling center.

Footage widely shared online shows the officer striking Banahene, who was clearly identified as press.

The GJA has labeled the act a direct attack on press freedom and a violation of journalists’ rights.

“This egregious act is a direct assault on press freedom and a blatant disregard for the rule of law,” Mr. Dwumfuor stated, noting that journalists play a vital role in promoting transparency during elections and must be protected not targeted.

Banahene has since filed a police complaint and sought medical attention. The GJA welcomed the steps taken and assured both victims of its full support in the pursuit of justice.

“The GJA is appalled that officers expected to protect journalists are instead perpetrating violence against them,” Mr. Dwumfuor said, calling for swift action from the Ghana Police Service to discipline the officer involved and identify the attacker of Martey.

The attacks occurred during a tense moment at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, which also saw disruptions involving former MP Mavis Hawa Koomson and others.

The GJA reaffirmed its commitment to defending press freedom and demanded accountability to ensure journalists’ safety in future electoral coverage.
