MTN Ghana contributed a total of GH¢8.6 billion in direct and indirect taxes to the government in 2024, according to the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Ishmael Yamson.
Mr. Yamson made this disclosure yesterday, March 27, 2025, during the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Accra International Conference Center.
Speaking to shareholders, Mr. Yamson emphasized that the telecommunications giant remains committed to fulfilling its tax obligations and supporting Ghana’s economic development. He highlighted that the GH¢8.6 billion tax contribution underscores MTN Ghana’s role as a major player in the country’s corporate tax landscape.
“MTN Ghana is committed to supporting the economic growth of the country. Our tax contributions are a testament to our dedication to national development, ensuring that government programs and initiatives receive the needed financial support,” he stated.
The telecom sector has been a key driver of Ghana’s digital transformation, and MTN Ghana has been at the forefront, investing heavily in infrastructure, digital innovation, and customer services. The company’s contribution to government revenue through taxes is seen as crucial in supporting public sector projects, including education, healthcare, and infrastructure development.
The direct and indirect taxes paid by MTN Ghana include; Corporate income tax, Value-added tax (VAT), National Fiscal Stabilization Levy, and Communication service tax. These contributions, he explained, are part of MTN Ghana’s broader commitment to supporting Ghana’s economic resilience, particularly as the country continues its post-pandemic recovery.
Beyond tax payments, MTN Ghana has been a key driver of digital and financial inclusion through its mobile money services and investments in expanding internet access. Mr. Yamson reiterated the company’s commitment to enhancing digital infrastructure and ensuring that millions of Ghanaians have access to reliable and affordable telecommunications services.
“MTN Ghana continues to invest in expanding 4G and 5G networks, improving service delivery, and ensuring that more people, especially in underserved communities, can access digital financial services,” he added.
At the AGM, shareholders welcomed the announcement, commending MTN Ghana for its significant contribution to government revenue and its commitment to long-term investments in Ghana’s telecom sector. Some, however, raised concerns about the impact of rising taxes and regulatory challenges on the company’s profitability and service affordability.
Mr. Yamson assured them that despite economic challenges, MTN Ghana remains financially strong and strategically positioned to continue its growth trajectory while supporting national development.
“Our focus remains on innovation, customer satisfaction, and sustainable business practices that benefit both our shareholders and the country as a whole,” he concluded. MTN Ghana’s tax contribution of GH¢8.6 billion in 2024 further solidifies its position as one of Ghana’s largest corporate taxpayers. As the country navigates economic challenges, the role of major companies like MTN Ghana in job creation, tax compliance, and digital innovation will remain vital in shaping Ghana’s economic future.
