GSE posts mixed performance

THE Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) opened the week with mixed outcomes across its key indices during Monday’s trading session. While the benchmark GSE Composite Index dipped, the Financial Stock Index gained, highlighting a divergent performance in the equities market.
The GSE Composite Index slipped by 4.61 points to close at 4,653.69 points, bringing its year-to-date (YTD) gains to an impressive 48.67%. Conversely, the GSE Financial Stock Index added 8.52 points, ending at 2,324.24 points with a YTD increase of 22.23%.
Market Capitalization and Trading Activity Surge
Market capitalization rose marginally by 0.11%, reaching GH₵104.31 billion, representing a YTD growth of 41.17%. Trading activity soared significantly, with volumes jumping by 190.70% to 427,667 shares, generating a total value of GH₵808,637.29.
Leading the session in trading volume was MTN Ghana, which accounted for 76.31% of overall trades despite its share price declining by 1 pesewa to close at GH₵2.35.
Meanwhile, Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) advanced by 1 pesewa, closing at 26 pesewas per share, and NewGold saw the biggest price gain, climbing GH₵2.54 to settle at GH₵397.43 per share.
Cedi Gains on Currency Market
On the foreign exchange front, the Ghanaian cedi recorded notable gains against major currencies. It appreciated by:
- 0.28% against the US Dollar, closing at GH₵15.93 (YTD depreciation: 25.42%).
- 0.12% against the British Pound, ending at GH₵20.15 (YTD depreciation: 24.90%).
- 0.14% against the Euro, trading at GH₵16.80 (YTD depreciation: 22.03%).
The gains reflect ongoing market adjustments and relative stability in the currency markets, as tracked by the Bank of Ghana’s interbank rates.
Outlook
The mixed performance of the GSE underscores the dynamism of Ghana’s equities market, with gains in specific sectors offsetting broader market declines. The sharp rise in trading activity indicates renewed investor interest, even as the cedi’s marginal appreciation provides some respite for foreign currency holders.
