GIA donates to Demonstration School for the Deaf

The Ghana Insurers Association (GIA) has donated a range of essential items to the Demonstration School for the Deaf in Mampong-Akuapem in the Eastern region as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to communities in Ghana.

The gesture was part of the Association’s annual Insurance Awareness Month celebration, emphasizing the theme of promoting inclusivity and accessibility.

The donation included two gallons of palm oil, two bags of 50kg rice, three sacks of maize, three sacks of 50kg beans, one sack of 50kg wheat, two sacks of 150kg gari, one bag of 50kg sugar, and three gallons of cooking oil.

The GIA, a trade association comprising 50 licensed insurance and reinsurance companies in Ghana, uses Insurance Awareness Month to connect with clients and educate them on the importance of insurance.

This year’s theme, “Promoting Inclusivity and Accessibility,” underscores the Association’s commitment to extending insurance coverage to all community members.

Second Vice-President of GIA, Mr. Henry Bukari, explained the significance of this year’s theme: “The theme for 2024 highlights the need to bring everyone on board, ensuring our products and services are not just for the affluent but accessible to every member of the community.”

Mr. Bukari emphasized that the visit to the school was a practical demonstration of this commitment.

“Persons with disabilities should not be left out of the insurance net. Our agents and insurance companies will be reaching out to all persons living with disabilities across the country. Our presence here today shows our dedication to this cause.”

He acknowledged that the insurance industry has often overlooked vulnerable segments of society, focusing instead on those who are healthy and able to pay premiums.

“When we talk about inclusivity in insurance, we mean covering all segments of our community and society with one form of insurance or another. Everyone, from the wealthy to the marginalized, needs some form of insurance.”

Highlighting the second aspect of the theme, accessibility, Mr. Bukari noted that GIA is training its agents to reach out to persons with disabilities with products tailored to their needs.

Mr. Bukari also called on corporate Ghana and other institutions to support the school.

“These children need the same opportunities as everyone else. We could have been in their place, but fate has brought them here, and we cannot leave them to their fate. We must support them with infrastructure, transport, food, and more to ensure they have a meaningful life,” he noted.

He concluded by emphasizing that this would not be the last time GIA would support the school.

“We will continue to focus on persons with disabilities, starting with these children, to help them grow into responsible adults who contribute to Ghana’s growth.”
