Vivo Energy launches wellness programme for commercial drivers

In a proactive move to enhance the well-being of commercial drivers and ensure road safety, Vivo Energy Ghana has joined forces with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and Health Nexus Network to introduce the “Fit2Dive Wellness Programme.”
The initiative is designed to tackle the physical and mental health of commercial drivers, with the ultimate aim of maintaining optimal health and safety standards while on the road.
At a launch event in Accra, Mr. Joseph Kankam, Health Safety Security Environment and Quality Manager (HSSEQ), expressed his enthusiasm for the program’s initiation.
He stated, “Following the successful launch and roll-out of our STOP, THINK & DRIVE road safety campaign, we are excited to refocus on the health of our commercial drivers. We believe that investing in the wellness of our drivers is essential for fostering a safer and more efficient transportation system.”
The Fit2Dive Wellness Programme aims to address the risks associated with driver fatigue, stress, and other health-related factors that can compromise road safety.
Mr. Kankam emphasized that the program incorporates a comprehensive wellness approach, which includes health screenings, fitness training, and educational seminars, among other components.
Participating drivers undergo free occupational health screenings, which encompass checking vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, and sugar levels.
Beyond the screenings, the program plans to collaborate with transport unions to organize fitness sessions at selected bus terminals, thus enhancing the physical and mental well-being of drivers and reducing the risk of accidents resulting from health-related issues.
Regular exercise is emphasized as a way to improve alertness, reaction times, and overall physical capabilities, making drivers more responsive and resilient on the road.
Additionally, promoting healthy lifestyles through fitness sessions can contribute to long-term wellness and reduce the likelihood of chronic health conditions that may impair driving abilities.
Mr. Kankam encouraged stakeholders to embrace the program and prioritize the well-being of drivers, working together to ensure a safer and more secure future for all road users.
He urged drivers, fleet operators, regulatory agencies, and other relevant parties to support the initiative, emphasizing that road safety should be a shared responsibility.
Dr. Elvis Kuma Forson, Chairman of Health Nexus Network, stressed that drivers should not only be concerned with loading their vehicles and driving but also take a keen interest in their health and well-being.
He stated, “Money cannot buy life, and if you have life, you have everything and can do everything.”
Mr. Daniel Wuaku, Director of Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation at NRSA, commended Vivo Energy Ghana and its partners for their “STOP, THINK & DRIVE Road Safety Campaign,” which has already shown promising results. He revealed that road accidents, deaths, and injuries have seen a reduction this year compared to previous years, demonstrating the positive impact of such initiatives on road safety.
Mr. Wuaku encouraged stakeholders, particularly drivers, to embrace the Fit2Dive Wellness Programme for the betterment of all and reminded them to be mindful of their health.
The program’s launch represents a significant step toward fostering a safer and healthier road environment in Ghana.
