MIIF Backs Government Afforestation Drive

The Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), Mrs Justina Nelson, has pledged the Fund’s support for the government’s afforestation and land restoration initiatives as part of efforts to promote responsible natural resource management and environmental sustainability.

Mrs Nelson made the commitment during a courtesy call on the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, in Accra, where both parties discussed opportunities to strengthen collaboration under the government’s RESET agenda.

According to MIIF, the engagement focused on advancing sustainable management of Ghana’s natural resources while integrating environmental protection into the country’s extractive sector.

> “The meeting explored opportunities for collaboration in advancing Ghana’s natural resource management and environmental sustainability under the government’s RESET agenda,” the Fund said in a statement.

The Fund explained that its support for afforestation forms part of a broader strategy to ensure that mineral wealth contributes not only to economic development but also to environmental conservation and long-term ecological resilience.

> “The initiative forms part of MIIF’s broader commitment to responsible natural resource management, environmental sustainability, and Ghana’s long-term ecological resilience,” MIIF stated.

Mrs Nelson noted that the initiative reflects the Fund’s commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility by investing in projects that restore degraded lands and expand the country’s forest cover.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of institutional partnerships in addressing the environmental impact of mining activities, particularly land degradation in mineral-producing communities.

Mr Buah underscored the need for stronger collaboration between state institutions to accelerate land restoration efforts and ensure that Ghana’s natural resources are managed sustainably for future generations.

The partnership between MIIF and the Ministry is expected to support the government’s broader environmental and economic agenda by financing afforestation programmes, restoring degraded ecosystems and creating alternative livelihood opportunities in mining communities.

Industry observers believe the initiative represents a significant shift in the management of mineral revenues, with greater emphasis on environmental stewardship alongside economic returns.

The collaboration is also expected to strengthen Ghana’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) credentials, enhance investor confidence in the extractive sector and contribute to national climate resilience.

Officials expressed confidence that integrating mineral revenue into afforestation programmes would help safeguard Ghana’s natural resources while promoting sustainable economic development under the RESET agenda.
