Afreximbank Tops Bloomberg 2025 Loan Rankings

The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has reinforced its leadership in African capital markets, clinching the top spot as both Mandated Lead Arranger and Bookrunner in the 2025 Bloomberg Africa Borrower Loans League Tables.
The Bank also secured the Number 3 position as Administrative Agent, highlighting its critical role in mobilising large-scale financing across the continent.
The Bloomberg rankings underscore Afreximbank’s expertise in structuring debt solutions and attracting diverse capital from Africa and beyond to support economic development. The Bank has maintained a consistent top-tier presence in these league tables in recent years.
In 2025, Afreximbank captured a 21.66% market share as Bookrunner, completing 14 deals. As Mandated Lead Arranger, it handled 20 transactions, accounting for a 23.65% market share, primarily in syndicated financing for the oil and gas sector.
Its performance as Administrative Agent delivered a 13.92% market share across 13 deals, also concentrated in oil and gas, reflecting the Bank’s strategic focus on bridging financing gaps in critical industries.
The Bloomberg Africa Borrower Loans League Tables are part of Bloomberg’s wider Capital Markets League Tables, which track leading arrangers, bookrunners, and advisors across loans, bonds, equity, and M&A transactions. These rankings serve as key benchmarks for investment bankers and analysts assessing market share, competition, and emerging trends.
Haytham Elmaayergi, Executive Vice President of Afreximbank’s Global Trade Bank, said the recognition reflects the commitment and capability of the Bank’s teams. He noted that the rankings demonstrate Afreximbank’s dedication to facilitating capital flows that drive economic growth and prosperity across Africa.
He added that the Bank will continue leveraging its unique position to promote high-impact investments and close financing gaps in the continent’s most vital sectors.
Afreximbank is a Pan-African multilateral financial institution mandated to finance and promote intra- and extra-African trade. For over 30 years, it has deployed innovative financing solutions to support the transformation of Africa’s trade structure, accelerate industrialisation, and boost economic expansion.
A strong supporter of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), Afreximbank launched the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), adopted by the African Union as the official payment and settlement platform for AfCFTA. The Bank also set up a US$10 billion Adjustment Fund to support effective participation in the trade agreement.
At the end of December 2024, Afreximbank’s total assets and contingencies stood at over US$40.1 billion, with shareholder funds of US$7.2 billion. The Bank holds investment-grade ratings from GCR (A), Moody’s (Baa2), China Chengxin International Credit Rating Co., Ltd (AAA), and Japan Credit Rating Agency (A-).
