Salaga, London markets to ease congestion for traders

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

The Mayor of Accra, Michael Nii Kpakpo Allotey, has pledged to ensure the completion of the Salaga and London markets as part of efforts to provide adequate trading spaces for traders in the capital. His assurance follows recent decongestion exercises carried out by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

During a tour of various trading areas affected by the exercise, Mayor Allotey engaged with traders and acknowledged the challenges they face due to limited space and the ongoing enforcement of street trading regulations.

He explained that the completion of the Salaga and London markets will help ease overcrowding in the central business district and offer displaced traders a more secure and dignified environment to conduct their businesses.

“We are committed to ensuring that every trader has a proper place to operate. These market projects are part of our long-term plan to decongest the city, promote orderly trading, and enhance the overall business environment in Accra,” the mayor said.

Mr. Allotey also indicated that the AMA will continue to work closely with market associations and relevant stakeholders to ensure transparency and fairness in the allocation of spaces once the projects are completed.

The Salaga and London market redevelopments form part of the broader urban renewal agenda by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, aimed at modernizing infrastructure and improving the livelihoods of informal sector workers, particularly women who dominate trading in the city.

The AMA has yet to announce a specific timeline for the completion of the projects.
