Desmond Ofei appointed head coach of Black Meteors
Former Black Satellites coach Desmond Ofei has been appointed as the new head coach of Ghana’s national U23 men’s team, the Black Meteors.
His appointment underscores the Ghana Football Association’s commitment to continuity and the smooth transition of youth players into the senior national teams.
Ofei, who currently serves as Assistant Coach of the Black Stars, brings a proven track record of success at youth level and experience at the highest tier of Ghanaian football.
Under his leadership, the Black Satellites won gold at the 13th African Games in 2023, qualified for the U20 AFCON after placing second at the WAFU B U20 Qualifying Tournament in Togo, competed at the U20 AFCON in Egypt, and most recently secured bronze at the WAFU B U20 Boys Championship in Accra.
Ofei will be supported by Yaw Preko and Baba Nuhu Malam as assistant coaches. Former Ghana international Yaw Preko brings extensive experience from coaching Accra Hearts of Oak, Accra Great Olympics and Nigerian side Ifenyi Ubah.
He recently led Ghana’s U15 boys to gold at the Mondialito Promise Tournament in Israel. Malam, a seasoned coach and former head of the Black Maidens, has coached Tamale Utrecht, Bolga All Stars and Real Tamale United. He currently manages Women’s Premier League side Pearlpia Ladies FC.
The technical team also includes Montari Tagoe, a former Asante Kotoko and Medeama SC goalkeeper, as Goalkeepers Coach. Atta Yeboah of Aduana Stars takes up the role of Team Manager, with Henry Bart-Plange as Team Masseur and Baba Aluta as Equipment Officer. Eli Vorgbe has been named Video Analyst, adding modern technical support to the setup.
On the medical side, Dr Eric Tetteh will serve as Team Doctor, with Collins Annor appointed as Physiotherapist. This robust technical and medical team is expected to provide the necessary support to elevate the Black Meteors’ performance ahead of upcoming assignments.
