MTN Ghana Elevated to Top-Tier Subsidiary as Group Eyes Growth

Telecommunications giant MTN Ghana has been elevated to the status of a major subsidiary within the MTN Group, following what the Group describes as exceptional performance and strong future growth prospects.

The announcement was made by MTN Group Chief Executive Officer Ralph Mupita, who said Ghana has now joined South Africa and Nigeria as one of the company’s three most significant markets.

“Up until the end of last year, we had two major subsidiaries within the context of the MTN Group… South Africa and Nigeria. This year, we are adding Ghana as the third major subsidiary… purely as a function of the way it has performed and the potential that we see going forward,” Mr. Mupita stated.

The recognition underscores MTN Ghana’s rising strategic importance within the Group’s operations, which span multiple markets and serve over 300 million customers.

Strong Performance Drives Recognition

MTN Ghana’s elevation follows a standout performance in 2025, during which it emerged as the best-performing operation across the Group under the “Million Dollar Challenge”, an internal benchmarking initiative that evaluates innovation, execution, and value creation.

Mr. Mupita commended the company’s leadership and workforce, noting that their performance has positioned Ghana as a key growth engine for the Group’s future.

The development also aligns with the company’s strong financial results, driven by expansion in data services, mobile money, and digital platforms, reflecting Ghana’s fast-growing digital economy.

High-Level Engagements in Ghana

During a three-day working visit to the country, Mr. Mupita held a series of high-level meetings with policymakers and regulators, signalling deeper collaboration between MTN and the Ghanaian government.

He met with the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, where discussions focused on improving network performance and the potential release of 5G spectrum to support both home and enterprise connectivity.

The MTN delegation also engaged with the Bank of Ghana and the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, exploring opportunities to strengthen collaboration in areas such as digital finance, investment promotion, and regulatory alignment.

At the central bank, discussions centred on tackling fraud and mobile money scams, with MTN indicating plans to deploy artificial intelligence tools to enhance detection and prevention systems.

“We are going to bring artificial intelligence to improve the ability to deal with scams and fraud… particularly in the mobile money market,” Mr. Mupita said.

Digital Economy at the Core

MTN Group identified the digital economy and financial technology as the primary drivers of its growth strategy in Ghana. The company plans to roll out additional financial services while supporting national financial inclusion efforts.

Beyond fintech, MTN is also exploring partnerships with government in areas such as fibre optic expansion, data centre development, AI deployment, and digital skills training.

Mr. Mupita highlighted a recent US$2 million investment by MTN Ghana into the One Million Coders programme, aimed at equipping young people with digital skills.

He also pointed to opportunities within Ghana’s creative economy, stressing the need to leverage digital platforms to enable content creation and monetisation.

Positioning Ghana for Digital Leapfrogging

Drawing comparisons with global success stories, Mr. Mupita suggested that Ghana has the potential to accelerate its development trajectory through sustained investment in digital infrastructure.

“Nothing stops Ghana from being able to leapfrog its own ambitions by a decade by deploying the digital economy and digital infrastructure,” he noted.

The elevation of MTN Ghana to a top-tier subsidiary not only reflects its operational strength but also signals growing investor confidence in Ghana’s digital transformation agenda and its role as a leading technology hub in the region.
