The African University College of Communications (AUCC) has celebrated its annual graduation ceremony under the theme “Leadership and Integrity in Nation Building”, highlighting its unwavering commitment to producing ethical and transformative leaders.
AUCC President, Professor Abeku Blankson, underscored the institution’s mission of nurturing graduates equipped with the values of integrity, responsibility, and service to drive societal progress. Addressing attendees at the university auditorium, Professor Blankson reflected on the importance of leadership anchored in ethical principles in shaping the future of Ghana.
“In these times, leadership with integrity is not just important; it is crucial for nation-building,” Professor Blankson emphasized. He challenged the graduating class of 462 students to carry the mantle of ethical leadership and to positively influence their communities.
Ethical Leadership at the Core
The graduation theme echoed AUCC’s core philosophy, which places integrity at the heart of its academic and extracurricular activities. Professor Blankson reminded graduates that their education transcends personal achievement and serves as a tool for societal transformation.
“This institution is committed to preparing leaders who can navigate the complexities of the modern world while staying true to principles of honesty, equity, and service,” he said. He encouraged the graduates to remain steadfast in their values as they face future ethical dilemmas.
Preparing Future Leaders
The university’s recent strides reflect its dedication to leadership excellence. AUCC hosted the Second HAEC/HBCU Research Conference, which emphasized practical research aimed at solving real-world challenges. Additionally, AUCC collaborated with UNESCO for the Fourth Pan-African Heritage Museum Conference, an event that explored the role of creative arts in reinterpreting African history.
These initiatives showcase AUCC’s focus on integrating academic rigor with leadership development, ensuring graduates are well-equipped to lead with vision and integrity.
A Milestone in Leadership
A defining moment for the institution was the announcement of its imminent Presidential Charter, which will cement AUCC’s status as a leader in higher education. Professor Blankson described this milestone as a validation of AUCC’s commitment to nurturing ethical leaders.
“This charter is not just a recognition of academic excellence but also of our role in shaping future leaders who exemplify the values of integrity and service,” he noted.
Inspiring Messages from Leaders
Guest speaker, Justice Nana Barima Yaw Kodie Oppong, Director of the Ghana School of Law, challenged graduates to embody ethical leadership in a rapidly changing world. “Your moral compass must guide you through the complexities of modern society,” he said, stressing the importance of justice, equity, and service.
Valedictorian William Gyasi, who received three awards for academic excellence, encouraged his peers to use their education as a tool for positive change. “Our achievements must benefit our communities and the world at large,” he said. Gyasi also urged Ghanaians to prioritize peace and unity ahead of the 2024 General Elections, emphasizing the need for integrity even in civic engagement.
A Legacy of Leadership
Since its inception, AUCC has graduated over 4,400 students, many of whom have become leaders in both public and private sectors globally. With its Presidential Charter on the horizon and plans for new postgraduate programs, including an MSc in Digital Communication and Data Analytics, AUCC is positioning itself as a hub for developing ethical and innovative leaders.
