GES Applauds 600-Bed Dormitory Donation to PRESEC Legon
The Ghana Education Service has commended Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist Dr Ernest Ofori Sarpong for donating a 600-bed ultra-modern dormitory facility to Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School, describing the gesture as a major contribution to secondary education infrastructure in the country.
The facility, which was officially commissioned at PRESEC Legon in Accra, is expected to ease accommodation pressure on students and improve boarding conditions at the school. Dr Ofori Sarpong, an old student of the institution, currently serves as Board Chairman of PRESEC Legon and Global President of the PRESEC Old Boys’ Association, known as Ɔdadeɛ.
According to GES, the project aligns with ongoing national efforts to improve access to quality secondary education and address infrastructure deficits in schools across the country.
“The facility significantly enhances ongoing efforts by Government to expand access to quality secondary education, particularly by improving accommodation and easing congestion in boarding houses,” the Service stated.
The donation comes at a time when many senior high schools continue to struggle with overcrowded dormitories due to increasing enrolment following educational reforms aimed at expanding access to second-cycle education.
Reports from the commissioning ceremony indicated that the new structure is equipped with spacious rooms, modern washrooms, and upgraded residential amenities designed to improve student welfare and comfort. The project has attracted widespread public admiration, with many describing it as one of the most significant alumni-funded educational infrastructure projects in recent years.
The commissioning coincided with Dr Ofori Sarpong’s 60th birthday celebration, which he marked by returning to his alma mater to hand over the facility. The event was attended by several prominent figures, including Haruna Iddrisu and businessman Osei Kwame Despite.
GES also used the occasion to highlight the growing importance of alumni associations in supporting educational development in Ghana.
“Old students’ associations have evolved into a key stakeholder within the education sector, contributing not only to infrastructure development but also to mentorship, scholarships, and institutional governance,” the Service noted.
The education agency further urged other alumni groups and corporate institutions to emulate such initiatives in support of national education development.
“Such partnerships remain vital in complementing Government’s efforts to improve teaching and learning conditions across the country,” GES added.
Founded in 1938, PRESEC Legon remains one of Ghana’s leading second-cycle institutions, widely recognised for academic excellence and achievements in science and mathematics competitions. The school’s alumni association has over the years supported several development projects aimed at improving infrastructure and student welfare.
GES assured the public that measures would be put in place to ensure proper maintenance and effective use of the new dormitory facility. The Service stressed that preserving school infrastructure remains essential to guaranteeing long-term value for future generations of students.
