Ghana, China Deepen Security Cooperation, Holds Strategic Talks in Beijing

Ghana and China have taken a major step toward expanding their security and development cooperation after Ghana’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Kojo Bonsu, held high-level talks with Wang Yong, Director General of the International Cooperation Department of China’s Ministry of Public Security, in Beijing.
The discussions reinforced Ghana’s commitment to strengthening its long-standing partnership with China at a time when both countries are seeking deeper alignment on security, governance and economic transformation. Ambassador Bonsu conveyed Ghana’s appreciation for China’s sustained support for national development, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, trade and human-capital investment. He reaffirmed the government’s resolve to deepen strategic ties in ways that advance mutual security and socio-economic progress.
A significant portion of the meeting focused on public safety and modern law-enforcement collaboration. Both delegations underscored the urgent need to boost institutional capacity within Ghana’s security services, given the rise of cyber threats, sophisticated criminal networks and evolving transnational risks across the sub-region. They explored pathways to expand technical training programs aimed at equipping Ghanaian officers with advanced policing skills, cybersecurity capabilities and enhanced crime-prevention tools suited for today’s digital and security landscape.
Strengthening intelligence-sharing also featured prominently in the discussions. Ambassador Bonsu and Wang Yong highlighted the importance of improving channels for timely information exchange, joint operational coordination and professional partnerships to combat challenges such as money laundering, human trafficking, narcotics trade and emerging cyber-enabled crimes. Both sides agreed that deeper cooperation in these areas would enhance national and regional security resilience.
Wang Yong reaffirmed China’s readiness to support Ghana through targeted technical exchanges, specialised training, and the sharing of relevant expertise. He described Ghana as a valued and reliable partner, emphasising that mutual trust, respect for sovereignty and sustained dialogue are crucial pillars for effective bilateral cooperation. He stressed that China sees Ghana not only as a strategic political partner but also as a key collaborator in maintaining peace and stability across West Africa.
Diplomatic observers say the engagement signals a broader evolution in Ghana–China relations, with security becoming a more prominent pillar alongside traditional economic and development cooperation. Analysts argue that both countries increasingly recognise that economic progress is closely linked to stability, counterterrorism preparedness and improved citizen protection.
The meeting concluded with a joint commitment to translate the outcomes into concrete programs and coordinated initiatives in the coming months. Officials on both sides described the talks as a reaffirmation of shared ambitions for stability, development and prosperity, underscoring the deepening strategic partnership between Ghana and China.
