Trump Reverses 15% Tariffs on Ghanaian Exports to US – Ablakwa

By: Solomon Nartey Tetteh

The United States has officially lifted the 15 percent tariff imposed on Ghana’s cocoa and selected agricultural products, a move expected to boost Ghana’s export earnings significantly.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the development in a post on his Facebook page, confirming that the tariff reversal took effect on November 13, 2025, following a new Executive Order signed by President Donald Trump.

“the 15% tariff reversal came into effect on November 13, 2025 following President Trump’s new Executive Order,” he stated.

According to Mr. Ablakwa, US diplomats have formally notified the Government of Ghana of the rescission, which ends the duties introduced under the previous policy direction. The affected products include cocoa and a range of Ghanaian agricultural exports such as cashew nuts, avocados, bananas, mangoes, oranges, limes, plantain, pineapples, guavas, coconuts, ginger and assorted peppers.

With Ghana exporting an average of 78,000 metric tonnes of cocoa beans to the US annually, and considering the current spot price of US$5,300 per metric tonne, the removal of the tariff could generate an additional US$60 million (approximately GH¢667 million) in revenue each year.

Mr. Ablakwa described the decision as a welcome development for Ghana, noting that the US remains the world’s largest importer of chocolate and cocoa products. He added that both nations will continue to strengthen their longstanding, mutually beneficial partnership.

“Ghana welcomes this positive development from the US which is the world’s leading importer of chocolate and cocoa products,” he noted. The agricultural sector is expected to benefit extensively from the tariff removal, which offers exporters greater competitiveness and improved access to one of the world’s most lucrative markets.
