Camidoh calls for greater investment in Ghanaian music industry

Ghanaian musician and producer Raphael Camidoh has underscored the urgent need for stakeholders in the Ghanaian music industry to significantly increase their investment in high-quality music production, particularly in video creation. In a recent interview with Melvin Da Enigma on Luv FM, Camidoh responded to growing comparisons between the thriving Nigerian music industry and Ghana’s more modest music scene, highlighting the critical role that investment plays in the success of the industry.

Camidoh noted that the local music industry lags behind Nigeria’s primarily due to a lack of substantial financial commitment from Ghanaian music investors. He pointed out that many industry players in Ghana are reluctant to allocate sufficient funds toward the production of music videos and marketing efforts, which he believes are crucial for elevating the global profile of Ghanaian artists.

“In Nigeria, their budget for shooting a music video is massive. If one takes a look at their budget, it can be enough to shoot an entire Ghanaian film,” Camidoh remarked, emphasizing the stark contrast between the two industries. He further explained that Nigerian investors have recognized the immense potential and profitability of the music industry, which has driven them to invest heavily in their artists and their work.

While acknowledging that the Ghanaian music scene has seen some growth, Camidoh stressed that much more needs to be done to accelerate this progress. He urged local investors to take cues from their Nigerian counterparts, who have successfully turned their music industry into a global powerhouse through strategic investments and a commitment to quality production.

Camidoh’s perspective is backed by his own success, particularly with his hit song “Sugarcane Remix,” which recently surpassed 100 million views on YouTube—a milestone that no other Ghanaian artist has achieved. This achievement, he believes, is a testament to the benefits of investing in one’s craft and the impact that quality production can have on an artist’s reach and influence.

Reflecting on his journey in the music industry, Camidoh shared that his passion for music was inspired by international artist Akon. He recounted his early days, selling Sobolo, Pure Water, and Asanaa on a table at Ola Girls Senior High School in the Volta Region, where he would sit and write his raps. His story is one of perseverance and dedication, illustrating how humble beginnings can lead to significant achievements with the right amount of effort and investment.

Camidoh also extended his gratitude to his fanbase and the broader Ghanaian public for their unwavering support throughout his career. He advised upcoming artists to focus on finding their unique voice and carving out a niche for themselves in the industry. “To find a spot, you need to find that unique thing that nobody else can do,” he said, encouraging aspiring musicians to differentiate themselves in a crowded market. As Camidoh continues to make waves in the music scene, his call for increased investment in the Ghanaian music industry resonates as a crucial step toward realizing the full potential of the country’s talented artists and positioning Ghana as a formidable force on the global music stage.
