MTN Ghana Introduces Y’ello Protect 419 to Tackle Fraud

MTN Ghana has launched a new anti-fraud initiative, Y’ello Protect 419, aimed at strengthening customer protection across its mobile and digital platforms.

The initiative introduces 419 as a dedicated shortcode for reporting fraud and suspicious activities related to MTN’s services, including voice and data connectivity, Mobile Money (MoMo) and other digital solutions. Customers who suspect fraudulent activity can dial 419 to alert the company for swift investigation and response.

According to MTN Ghana, the introduction of the shortcode forms part of broader efforts to enhance security systems, safeguard users and reinforce public confidence in digital and financial services.

Speaking at the launch, Chief Customer Relations Officer Jemima Kotei Walsh said the new measure underscores the company’s commitment to protecting its customers from rising fraud risks. She explained that providing a simple and easy-to-remember shortcode empowers customers to report suspicious incidents promptly.

The move, she noted, is expected to strengthen public trust, improve customer protection and contribute to building a safer digital ecosystem.

She urged subscribers and the general public to remain vigilant and immediately report suspicious calls, text messages or financial transactions through the 419 line.

Fraud remains a significant challenge within the telecommunications and digital financial services sectors, with increasing cases of mobile money scams and identity theft. MTN Ghana indicated that the dedicated reporting channel is designed to promote customer awareness while enabling quicker resolution of reported cases.

The launch of Y’ello Protect 419 builds on several other anti-fraud interventions already rolled out by the company to secure its platforms and protect users.

In a related development, MTN Ghana says it is positioning itself for stronger growth and innovation in 2026. Chief Executive Officer Stephen Blewett outlined plans to improve customer experience and expand digital access nationwide.

He stated that while achieving targets is important, the company’s priority remains setting new goals that focus on understanding and responding effectively to customer needs. He added that MTN is paying close attention to customer feedback and taking deliberate steps to address concerns.

Mr Blewett further emphasised that expanding digital services and strengthening Ghana’s digital ecosystem will remain central to the company’s strategy, noting that as the digital landscape evolves rapidly, efforts must be made to ensure broader access for more Ghanaians.
