DVLA to launch biometric international licences 2026
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has unveiled plans to introduce biometric versions of Ghana’s International Driver’s Licence (IDL) and International Vehicle Permit (IVP) beginning in 2026.
The initiative forms part of efforts to modernise the country’s licensing systems, enhance the global recognition of Ghanaian-issued travel documents, and ensure full compliance with international standards.
According to an announcement shared on the official Facebook page of DVLA Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Julius Neequaye Kotey, the upcoming upgrade seeks to address the occasional rejection of Ghanaian international licences and permits by certain foreign jurisdictions.
He explained that the biometric format will make verification easier for authorities abroad while improving data security for Ghanaian motorists.
The new Biometric International Driver’s Licence and Biometric International Vehicle Permit will each feature a bio-data page that adheres strictly to the specifications of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
The incorporation of biometric features, such as digital fingerprints and high-security holograms, will ensure the authenticity of the documents and reduce the risk of fraud.
In a statement, the DVLA emphasised that this move marks a significant step towards establishing a more secure and internationally verifiable identification system for Ghanaian drivers and vehicles operating across borders.
The Authority further noted that the introduction of the biometric documents aligns with ongoing efforts to digitise its services and improve convenience for customers through technological innovation.
The rollout of the new biometric licences and permits is expected to begin at all DVLA offices nationwide in 2026.
The Authority added that transitional measures will be implemented to allow holders of existing international licences and vehicle permits to smoothly migrate to the new system once it becomes operational.
