A significant fire outbreak occurred at the Dzorwulu Bulk Supply Point in Accra on Sunday, May 4, 2025 resulting in widespread power outages across multiple communities in the capital. The incident, which took place during the early hours of the day, has caused major disruptions to both residential and commercial electricity supply, raising concerns among affected citizens and business owners.
Eyewitness accounts from residents and commuters in the vicinity describe scenes of alarm and confusion as thick, black plumes of smoke billowed high into the sky from the affected facility. The dense smoke was visible from several kilometres away, alerting many to the seriousness of the situation even before official information was released.
In response to the emergency, personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were promptly deployed to the scene. Firefighters worked tirelessly under challenging conditions to bring the raging blaze under control. Their efforts were supported by other emergency service teams who ensured that the area was evacuated and secured to prevent further danger to the public.
As of the time of reporting, the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Authorities have launched a preliminary investigation into the incident to establish what might have triggered the outbreak at such a critical power infrastructure site. The entire area surrounding the facility has been cordoned off to restrict access and ensure the safety of both emergency workers and the general public.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the main power distributor in the country, has officially confirmed the fire incident and its significant impact on electricity supply across Accra. In a statement released shortly after the fire broke out, ECG acknowledged the resulting power cuts and expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to its customers.
The company further assured the public that all necessary measures were being taken to restore electricity supply to affected areas as swiftly and safely as possible. Restoration efforts, however, are contingent upon the successful extinguishing of the fire and the completion of a thorough safety assessment of the damaged infrastructure.
ECG has appealed to the public for patience and understanding in the face of this unforeseen disruption. “We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this incident has caused,” the statement read. “Our engineers and emergency response teams are working around the clock to assess the situation and begin restoration efforts immediately after clearance is given.”
The Dzorwulu Bulk Supply Point is a key component in the distribution of electricity within the Greater Accra Region, and any damage to it has far-reaching implications for both homes and businesses. Authorities have pledged to provide timely updates as investigations and recovery efforts continue.
As the situation develops, residents are being advised to stay away from the affected area and to follow safety instructions issued by emergency officials. ECG and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) are expected to collaborate closely in restoring stability to the power supply network as soon as it is deemed safe to do so. For now, large sections of Accra remain without electricity, and the full extent of the damage to the supply point is yet to be assessed. More updates will be provided as further information becomes available.
