Heart of Lions Stun Asante Kotoko to Dent Title Ambitions

Heart of Lions dealt a major blow to Asante Kotoko’s Ghana Premier League title hopes with an impressive 3–1 victory at the Kpando Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Kotoko, who were already eight points behind league leaders Medeama following Friday’s defeat to Nations FC, failed to capitalise on the leaders’ slip-up and saw their title chase suffer another setback.

After a cagey opening, the hosts broke the deadlock in the 35th minute through Seedorf Asante, who fired home a well-taken goal to give Heart of Lions the lead. The pressure continued, and Ali Fawzi doubled the advantage on the stroke of half-time to send the home side into the break firmly in control.

Kotoko showed renewed urgency after the interval and pulled one back around the hour mark when Samba O’Neil calmly converted from the penalty spot, raising hopes of a comeback.

However, those hopes were dashed 20 minutes from time as forward Michael Ephson restored Heart of Lions’ two-goal cushion, sealing the victory for the hosts.

Kotoko were unable to mount a late response, as Heart of Lions returned to winning ways after their previous defeat to Bechem United.

The Porcupine Warriors now sit third on the league table with 35 points, five more than Heart of Lions, who occupy seventh place.

Kotoko’s attention now turns to the highly anticipated Super Clash against Hearts of Oak in Kumasi, while Heart of Lions travel to face Berekum Chelsea in their next fixture.
