Buipe market traders raise health concerns over lack of toilets

Traders at the Buipe Market are urging the Central Gonja District Assembly to intervene immediately, citing serious public health risks due to the lack of sanitary facilities.

This has forced traders and customers to resort to open defecation, raising fears about the potential spread of diseases.

The Buipe Market is the largest in the Savannah Region, attracting traders and customers from far and near. Despite its busy nature, the thousands of people who patronise the market do not have access to sanitary facilities.

Secretary of the Cattle Market, Alhaji Mohammed, lamented the total lack of toilets, stating that there is nowhere safe to ease themselves.

He explained that being forced to use the surrounding bush poses a danger to businesspeople, as they cannot know who else might be hiding there.

Furthermore, he stressed that the entire market area is now littered with human waste, making the environment severely unhygienic.

According to the Central Gonja District Assembly, redevelopment of the market remains a priority.

District Chief Executive for Central Gonja, Mahama Fuseini, highlighted the Assembly’s plans for the market.

“The market is one of my priorities and that of the Assembly. Twenty people have been employed to sweep the market, and for the roads and toilets, together with my MP, we will address the challenges. We are committed to developing the market and we will surely do that,” he assured.
