Mahama orders contractor to meet deadline for Ofankor–Nsawam road

President John Mahama has directed the contractor working on the Ofankor–Nsawam road project to complete the work on schedule, stressing that government will strictly enforce the June 2026 deadline.

The President gave the directive when he inspected ongoing works on the crucial highway on Wednesday, 3 September 2025.

He described the project as vital, noting that it links Accra and Kumasi, the country’s two largest cities, and that delays have caused severe hardship for commuters while raising questions about financial accountability.

“A loan was taken for this project, and I don’t understand why the money is finished while the project remains incomplete. We are now having to pay an additional GHS78 million from government funds. We need to find out what really happened, whether the estimates were wrong or something else went wrong,” President Mahama stated.

While acknowledging that traffic flow has improved in recent weeks, he urged the contractor to strengthen site management to minimise disruption to motorists as construction continues.

“So we will hold you to your word. You say by the end of the second quarter next year, you should be finished,” he cautioned.

The President further revealed that the project has been incorporated into government’s Big Push programme, which has allocated over GHS14 billion this year, with GHS30 billion expected in 2026, to guarantee stable funding for key infrastructure projects.

“As the government commits to paying you well, you too must commit to moving faster and using quality materials. Your company is one of the most reputable road construction firms in Ghana, and we expect this project to reflect the quality of your brand,” he said.
