Prez Mahama urges Finance Minister to lead economic recovery

President John Mahama has sworn in six ministerial nominees, including Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as Minister for Finance, emphasizing the critical role of economic management in reviving Ghana’s fortunes. During the ceremony, the president issued a strong admonition to Dr. Forson, highlighting the public’s expectations for swift and decisive action to stabilize the nation’s economy.

“The people of Ghana are looking up to you, Dr. Forson, to reduce inflation, make life more affordable, and rein in the deficits to bring our national debt to sustainable levels,” President Mahama stated.

The finance minister was also tasked with stabilizing the cedi and achieving macroeconomic stability to foster economic growth. President Mahama underscored the urgency of these objectives, stressing that addressing these economic challenges is paramount to improving the livelihoods of Ghanaians.

Focus on Economic Recovery

Dr. Forson’s appointment comes at a time when Ghana faces significant economic hurdles, including rising inflation, currency instability, and a high public debt burden. The president emphasized that restoring stability and instilling confidence in the economy would create opportunities for innovation and growth.

Lean Government Strategy

The swearing-in ceremony also marked President Mahama’s commitment to running a lean and efficient government. The newly approved ministers are part of a 60-member team, including deputies, designed to streamline governance and optimize resources.

The six sworn-in ministers, described by the president as being responsible for “the most critical sectors of our national life,” include:

            •           Dr. Dominic Ayine, Attorney General

            •           John Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition

            •           Haruna Iddrisu, Minister for Education

            •           Eric Opoku, Minister for Food and Agriculture

            •           Governs Kwame Agbodza, Minister for Roads and Highways

Setting Expectations

In his address, President Mahama called on the ministers, particularly Dr. Forson, to work diligently to meet the public’s expectations. “This government is focused on resetting our dear country Ghana, which has suffered in recent years from severe crises in many sectors,” he remarked.
