IT Enthusiast Emmanuel Agyei Boateng has called for increased cybersecurity awareness and stronger digital skills training to help Ghanaian businesses protect themselves and operate more efficiently in an increasingly digital world. Speaking on the Business Breakfast on Zed 101.9FM, he stressed that many of the challenges organisations face stem from limited knowledge of basic cybersecurity practices and inadequate staff training.
Mr. Boateng explained that while cybersecurity is a vast and complex field, companies can begin tackling threats by focusing on simple but essential awareness-based training.
“Cybersecurity is a very huge engineering area, but we can start with courses that build awareness. Employees should know how to keep their passwords safe, what phishing means, what spamming is, how to use the internet properly, and which links or websites are safe. These short, simple courses can help solve many of the problems we face,” he said.
He emphasised that understanding what to look for when browsing online is a crucial first step in preventing cyber threats, especially for businesses that rely heavily on digital systems.
Mr. Boateng also highlighted the importance of employers providing on-the-job training to equip workers with the digital tools necessary for modern business operations. He mentioned Microsoft Office tools as a key area where training can significantly boost workplace productivity.
“When you provide on-the-job training on tools like Microsoft Office, employees can use them better to improve business outcomes,” he stated.
Mr. Boateng also underscored the need for mentorship programmes within organisations. He noted that mentoring new employees and guiding colleagues across departments will not only improve digital literacy but also keep workers updated on new technologies.
“We need more mentorship to guide new employees and colleagues in their various sectors. It will keep them up to date with new technologies and prevent them from being pushed out of business,” he added.
He urged companies to prioritise continuous learning and skill development to better position their workforce for the rapid technological advancements shaping today’s business landscape.
