Health Ministry urges nurses to end strike

The Ministry of Health has appealed to the leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to reconsider its planned industrial action over delays in implementing their revised Conditions of Service.
In a statement, the Ministry expressed disappointment after the GRNMA announced a series of nationwide strikes during a press conference.
The Ministry acknowledged that while the revised Conditions of Service were scheduled to take effect in 2024 under the previous administration, the implementation had unfortunately been delayed.
To address the matter, the Ministry said a joint committee—comprising representatives from the GRNMA, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Finance—had been set up to expedite the process.
It, however, condemned the planned strike, stressing that patient care should not be used as leverage in labor disputes.
“Using the lives of patients as leverage in the demand for the implementation of a collective bargaining agreement is not the appropriate course of action,” the Ministry stated. It further urged the GRNMA to return to the negotiation table and prioritize dialogue in the interest of public health.
