AfDB backs Ghana’s $10bn ‘big push’

…to transform transport infrastructure

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the Government of Ghana to implement the USD10 billion ‘Big Push’ infrastructure agenda, with a particular focus on transport development.

AfDB Vice President for Private Sector, Infrastructure, and Industrialization, Mr. Solomon Quaynor, described transport infrastructure as a core strength of the Bank, citing successful projects delivered across the African continent.

“The third area is advancing transport infrastructure development. Transport infrastructure development represents one of our core areas of strength as the African Development Bank, as we have demonstrated through numerous successful projects across the continent,” he said.

Mr. Quaynor made these remarks during a high-level Bank mission to Accra, which included strategic engagements with key national institutions such as the Ministry of Roads and Highways, the Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority, and the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Unit of the Ministry of Finance.

He indicated that the Bank was impressed with the transport-focused vision under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration and confirmed that the AfDB would explore opportunities to collaborate on key projects under the Big Push initiative.

“We do believe that we are aligned with the priority projects outlined in the Big Push infrastructure initiative, and we will be exploring these,” Mr. Quaynor emphasized.

The ‘Big Push’ initiative was introduced by the government as a comprehensive effort to inject significant investment into Ghana’s infrastructure sector.

It aims to drive economic growth, job creation, and industrial development by upgrading road networks, expanding port infrastructure, and leveraging public-private partnerships.
