Prioritize Early Childbearing to Avoid Fertility Challenges

Story By: Nartey Tetteh Solomon

Renowned obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Padi Ayetey has advised women to consider having children earlier in life, emphasizing that both the quality and quantity of a woman’s eggs decline with age. He attributed many infertility issues to delayed childbirth, stressing that waiting too long can significantly impact reproductive health.

Studies show that as a woman ages, the number of eggs in her ovaries gradually decreases which is a natural part of the aging process. Research indicates that women can lose hundreds of thousands of eggs over their lifetime, primarily through a process called follicular atresia, where eggs either die off or are absorbed by the body. While the exact rate of egg loss varies, fertility generally declines sharply after age 35 due to both a reduction in egg quantity and quality.

Dr. Padi explained that by age 25, approximately 30% of a woman’s eggs may be abnormal, increasing the risk of complications.

“At age 25, about 70% of a woman’s eggs are normal, while 30% are abnormal. However, between ages 35 and 38, nearly 50% of the eggs may be abnormal,” he noted.

He further highlighted that by age 40, many women are affected by health conditions that further compromise fertility.

“You must remember that by age 40, the uterus may have been affected by fibroids, adenomyosis, scar tissue, and adhesions, all of which can reduce the chances of a successful pregnancy,” he stated.

Speaking on The Zed Wellness Link on Sunday March 16, 2025, Dr. Padi pointed out that societal upbringing and cultural influences contribute to delayed childbirth.

“I believe that we don’t receive enough guidance at home on selecting the right life partner, and our priorities are often shaped differently,” he stated.

He reiterated the importance of raising awareness about reproductive health and encouraging informed family planning decisions. Advising young women, he urged them to consider choosing a life partner early to avoid the risks associated with late childbearing. “Prioritize having children early. Prioritize finding a life partner earlier rather than later, as long as it is within your control. And seek early medical attention when needed,” he stressed.
