MoMo Vendor Shoots Robber, Recovers GH¢140,000

A mobile money (MoMo) vendor has recovered the full GH¢140,000 stolen during a violent robbery attack at Lashibi in the Greater Accra Region after fatally shooting one of two armed robbers in an exchange of gunfire.

The incident occurred on Friday, July 3, 2026, when two armed men riding on a motorbike intercepted the vendor’s vehicle in what police believe was a carefully coordinated robbery.

According to the Accra Regional Police Command, the suspects opened fire on the vehicle, damaging the rear tyre and smashing the windscreen before seizing a bag containing GH¢140,000.

However, the robbery was foiled when the vendor, who was legally armed, returned fire as the attackers attempted to flee.

In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs of the Accra Regional Police Command, Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the police said one of the suspects was fatally shot during the exchange, while the second suspect escaped on foot after abandoning the stolen cash.

Police officers responding to the scene recovered the entire GH¢140,000, ensuring that none of the stolen money was lost. The vendor escaped the attack without sustaining any injuries.

A search conducted on the deceased suspect led to the recovery of several weapons and other exhibits believed to have been used in the robbery.

According to the police, officers retrieved an AK-47 assault rifle, two magazines loaded with 55 rounds of live ammunition, an additional 11 rounds of ammunition, GH¢3,000 in cash, a Samsung mobile phone, and an identification card bearing the name Innocent Elemuwa Akachukeu, aged 46.

Crime Scene Management personnel also recovered five spent AK-47 shell casings and two spent pistol shell casings, which are expected to assist investigators in reconstructing the incident.

The body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, identification and autopsy as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, the Accra Regional Police Command has launched a manhunt for the second suspect, who remains at large.

Police have appealed to the public to provide any information that could assist in locating and arresting the fugitive, urging anyone with relevant intelligence to report to the nearest police station or call the emergency numbers 18555 or 191.

The latest incident underscores the persistent security threats facing mobile money vendors across Ghana. In recent years, MoMo operators have increasingly become targets of armed robberies because they frequently handle large amounts of cash, prompting repeated calls for stronger security measures, enhanced police patrols, wider deployment of surveillance systems, and greater public awareness to help protect operators and reduce violent attacks.
