Lead by example, AfriCIA urges Prez Mahama
THE African Centre for International Affairs (AfriCIA) has commended President John Dramani Mahama on his election victory in the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, noting the critical opportunity, it presents for Ghana to drive sustainable development and strengthen regional cooperation across Africa.
AfriCIA, a leading institution committed to promoting diplomatic excellence and sustainable governance, also lauded the historic election of Ghana’s first female Vice-President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, describing the outcome as a transformative moment for the country and the continent.
Ghana’s leadership in sustainable development
In its congratulatory message, AfriCIA stressed the need for Ghana to lead by example in achieving sustainable development, noting that the Mahama administration has a unique opportunity to implement policies that address pressing environmental, social, and economic challenges.
“Ghana has long been a beacon of hope for democratic governance and development in Africa. We trust that under President Mahama’s leadership, the nation will continue to prioritize sustainable development, ensuring equitable growth and environmental preservation,” the statement read.
AfriCIA urged the new administration to intensify efforts in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in areas such as poverty reduction, climate action, and quality education.
Deepening regional cooperation
The Centre highlighted Ghana’s pivotal role in fostering regional cooperation through ECOWAS and the African Union (AU).
“President Mahama’s leadership presents an opportunity for Ghana to galvanize stronger partnerships within ECOWAS and the AU, addressing pressing issues such as peace and security, counterterrorism, and human rights protection,” AfriCIA stated.
Ghana’s proactive engagement in regional organizations, it added, can serve as a catalyst for addressing collective challenges, particularly in ensuring stability and fostering inclusive growth across the continent.
Accelerating AfCFTA implementation
AfriCIA also underscored the importance of advancing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), a transformative initiative aimed at creating the world’s largest free trade area by member states.
“We are confident that the Mahama administration will prioritize deeper implementation of AfCFTA, positioning Ghana as a hub for intra-African trade and industrialization. This initiative is crucial for boosting economic integration, creating jobs, and enhancing the continent’s competitiveness on the global stage,” the statement added.
The Centre called for policies that enhance cross-border trade, improve infrastructure, and eliminate barriers to economic cooperation among African nations.

AfriCIA expressed optimism that Ghana’s new leadership will uphold its legacy of democratic excellence while championing the broader goals of regional unity and sustainable development.
“We believe that Ghana’s commitment to fostering regional cooperation, advancing AfCFTA, and ensuring sustainable development will remain steadfast under President Mahama’s leadership. These efforts are vital for building a resilient and prosperous Africa,” AfriCIA concluded.
