Ghana, Morocco scrap visas

Ghanaian citizens will no longer require visas to travel to Morocco, following a new bilateral agreement between the two countries.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who described the agreement as a “game-changer” for trade, tourism, and people-to-people engagement.
In a statement shared via his Facebook page, Mr. Ablakwa disclosed that the visa-free arrangement takes immediate effect, replacing the traditional visa system with a 24-houronline travel authorisation mechanism. This new process removes the need for in-person visits to embassies and significantly streamlines travel between the two nations.
“This is one of the significant agreements reached yesterday with the Foreign Minister of Morocco, H.E. Nasser Bourita, during my two-day working visit,” Mr. Ablakwa stated. He described the measure as part of the broader efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties and economic cooperation between Ghana and the Kingdom of Morocco.
According to the minister, the move is expected to promote not only bilateral travel but also investments and cultural exchanges, as the simplified travel regime makes it easier for Ghanaians to explore opportunities in Morocco and vice versa.
“With existing direct flights between Ghana and Morocco and more expected to follow in light of this development—we anticipate a significant boost in trade, tourism, and people-to-people connections between the two nations,” he said.
Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that the vision behind this visa waiver agreement aligns with broader continental goals of integration, mobility, and shared prosperity.
“The borders in Africa must not be allowed to divide us, they can be bridges of connectivity. We expect this 24-hour online travel authorisation between Ghana and Morocco to boost trade, tourism, and strengthen people-to-people engagements between both countries,” he added.
The announcement has already drawn positive responses from business leaders and civil society groups who see it as a practical step toward unlocking Africa’s intra-continental potential. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to release additional details in the coming days on how Ghanaian citizens can access the online travel authorisation portal.
