Police seize hard drugs, gun from Sabon-Zongo trader

The Ghana Police Service has retrieved five large sacks containing a range of dangerous pharmaceutical substances and a pump-action shotgun from a trader in Sabon-Zongo, a suburb of Accra.
The 30-year-old suspect, identified as Abdul Amidu Mohammed, is currently standing trial for illegal possession of firearms and illicit drugs following his arrest.
According to police sources, the seized items include high-risk substances such as Red—a potent and often misused prescription drug—as well as Tramadol, Diazepam (commonly referred to as Volume 10), and other unregistered medications. These drugs are known for their addictive properties and potential to cause serious health complications when abused.
The operation, conducted by the Accra Regional Police Command, followed intelligence tip-offs and surveillance activities that linked the suspect to illicit drug distribution in the area. Upon raiding his premises, the team discovered the five sacks stashed in a concealed storage space, alongside the unlicensed firearm.
“The quantity and nature of the drugs recovered pose a serious threat to public safety,” a senior officer with the narcotics division told the media. “These substances are dangerous, especially in the hands of unqualified individuals. The public must remain vigilant and continue to support law enforcement efforts.”
Preliminary investigations suggest that the drugs were intended for local distribution, particularly among youth in the area. Police are also probing whether the suspect is connected to a wider drug trafficking network.
Abdul Amidu Mohammed has been arraigned before the Accra Circuit Court on charges of illegal possession of arms and narcotic substances. He has been remanded into custody pending further investigations.
The police have assured the public that operations to crack down on the illegal drug trade will be intensified, especially in urban communities where substance abuse continues to rise.
Authorities are also urging community members to report suspicious activity to help tackle the growing menace of drug trafficking and abuse across the country.
