Gov’t Resolves Mobile Network Disruptions Following Spectrum Allocation

The government has announced that the widespread mobile network challenges that frustrated users across the country earlier this year have now been addressed, following the release of additional spectrum to major telecommunications companies.
Deputy Communications Minister Mohammed Adams Sukparu told the media that President Mahama directed the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation to work closely with industry stakeholders, particularly MTN and Telecel (Vodafone), to restore service quality and reduce the frequent call drops and poor data connectivity that users had been experiencing. “Earlier this year, many people struggled to make a simple phone call. Sometimes you would call, and either you could not hear the person on the other end, or they could not hear you,”
Mr. Sukparu said. “Government stepped in by issuing additional spectrum to the telcos, and this is directly responsible for the improvements in call clarity and network reliability that we are now seeing.” He explained that although the detailed technical work carried out behind the scenes may not have been visible to the public, it involved extensive upgrades to network capacity and infrastructure, which have contributed to the smoother service now available to subscribers nationwide.
According to the Deputy Minister, these interventions are part of a broader government effort to strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure and advance its digital transformation agenda, which relies on stable and high-quality telecommunications networks. He emphasised that reliable network services are critical not only for everyday communication but also for supporting business, education, and other sectors of the economy that increasingly depend on digital connectivity.
The recent improvements follow months of public complaints regarding dropped calls, poor voice quality, and inconsistent mobile data services. Telecom operators had previously cited network congestion and limited spectrum as the main causes of the disruptions.
Mr. Sukparu assured the public that the Ministry will continue to monitor network performance and ensure that telecom companies maintain the improved service standards. He encouraged users to report any persistent issues so that the government and service providers can respond promptly.
“With the new spectrum and the upgrades made, we are confident that users will experience more reliable connections and better overall service quality,” he concluded.
