FIFA Prez Infantino Condemns Alleged Racist Abuse of Vinícius in Benfica-UCL Game

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has strongly condemned the alleged racist abuse directed at Vinícius Júnior during a UEFA Champions League match between SL Benfica and Real Madrid CF.
In a statement issued after the game, Infantino said he was “shocked and saddened” by the incident and reiterated that racism has no place in football or society.
He called on all relevant stakeholders to take firm action and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
“There is absolutely no room for racism in our sport and in society,” Infantino said.
“We need all the relevant stakeholders to take action and hold those responsible to account.”
The FIFA president also commended referee François Letexier for activating the anti-racism protocol during the match by using the official arm gesture to halt play and address the situation in the stadium.
The move forms part of football’s established procedure to respond to discriminatory behaviour during games.
Through its Global Stand Against Racism campaign and the Players’ Voice Panel, FIFA says it remains committed to protecting players, officials and supporters from all forms of discrimination.
Vinícius Júnior has previously been subjected to racist abuse in European competitions, incidents that have intensified calls for tougher sanctions and stronger enforcement.
UEFA is expected to review the latest case as football authorities continue efforts to eradicate racism from the sport.
