Trump’s Expanding Business Ventures Raise Fresh Concerns over Ethics and Influence

Not long after making headlines for consuming a $6.2 million banana as part of an art stunt, Chinese crypto entrepreneur Justin Sun is in the spotlight again—this time for a $30 million investment in the cryptocurrency firm World Liberty Financial. Launched in October, the company had struggled to attract investors, but Sun’s cash infusion tipped the scales, enabling the firm to move forward.

This wasn’t just a lifeline for the firm—it also unlocked substantial financial benefits for Donald Trump. Sun’s investment allowed Trump and his family to begin profiting from the venture, with initial estimates suggesting earnings of $20 million or more.

Sun, who is currently facing fraud charges in the U.S. over his own cryptocurrency dealings, has remained tight-lipped about his motivations for investing in World Liberty Financial, a firm with tokens that cannot even be traded. But his decision has set off alarm bells among ethics watchdogs, who see it as emblematic of the growing conflicts of interest surrounding Trump’s sprawling business empire.

Ethics experts have long criticized Trump’s failure to address potential conflicts of interest stemming from his business ventures. During his first term as president, critics focused on the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C., which became a hub for lobbyists and foreign diplomats. The venue drew accusations that Trump was indirectly profiting from his office, violating constitutional prohibitions against presidents receiving foreign emoluments.

The landscape has since evolved. Trump’s business portfolio now includes ventures in social media, cryptocurrency, and a Saudi-backed golf league. Experts say these holdings create new opportunities for individuals and entities seeking to influence U.S. policy to discreetly funnel money into Trump’s enterprises.

Michael Ohlrogge, a law professor at New York University, noted the shift: “The scale has increased, and the ease has increased. You can only book so many hotel rooms, but there are no such limits when it comes to these kinds of investments.”

Trump’s public embrace of cryptocurrency has raised eyebrows. He has outlined plans to roll back crypto regulations and even proposed a national Bitcoin reserve. Critics worry that these positions, while ostensibly aimed at boosting the industry, could also serve Trump’s financial interests.

Virginia Canter, chief ethics counsel at Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, said Trump’s involvement in crypto creates a direct conflict of interest: “The way crypto is regulated could have a profound impact on his personal wealth.”

While some, like Nik Bhatia, founder of Bitcoin Layer, argue that Trump’s crypto advocacy reflects the priorities of his supporters, others remain skeptical. “His pro-crypto stance will undoubtedly benefit his business ventures,” Bhatia conceded.

Sun’s $30 million investment in World Liberty Financial highlights the risks of these entanglements. In announcing his move, Sun praised Trump’s crypto policies, calling the U.S. a “blockchain hub” under Trump’s leadership.

Despite these concerns, Trump has shown little interest in addressing potential conflicts. Unlike government officials, U.S. presidents are not subject to strict conflict-of-interest laws. Lawsuits brought during Trump’s first term over alleged violations of the Constitution’s emoluments clause were ultimately dismissed.

More recently, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that presidents have broad immunity from criminal prosecution while in office, further reducing the accountability mechanisms in place. Trump has vowed to retain his stake in Trump Media, which operates the social media platform Truth Social. He also continues to promote ventures like World Liberty Financial and sell Trump-branded merchandise. His Mar-a-Lago resort remains a venue where members paying steep fees gain direct access to Trump, raising further transparency concerns.
