Nvidia shares fall despite record $30bn revenue

Shares in Nvidia declined despite the AI chip giant surpassing expectations with record-breaking revenue of $30 billion for the three months ending in July. The company, a key beneficiary of the AI boom, has seen its market value soar to over $3 trillion. However, the impressive financial results were met with a 6% drop in after-hours trading in New York, as investors grew concerned about the pace of future growth.
Nvidia’s revenue for the quarter increased by 122% year-over-year, comfortably beating analysts’ forecasts of $28.7 billion. While this marks another strong performance, some market observers suggest that Nvidia’s rapid growth might be beginning to slow. Simon French, head of research at Panmure Liberum, noted that despite the “spectacular” sales growth, the market may be reacting to signs that this growth rate could be tapering.
Analysts now expect more than just beating estimates from Nvidia. Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, remarked that the market anticipated an even larger outperformance, leading to some disappointment.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang emphasized the transformative potential of generative AI across all industries. However, Simon French pointed out that the company faces challenges in maintaining its high growth expectations. Issues such as production delays with Nvidia’s next-generation Blackwell chip could be contributing to investor concerns.
Nvidia’s earnings announcements have become significant events on Wall Street, often leading to frenzied trading activity. The company’s prominent position in the AI industry, led by Huang, has drawn comparisons to pop culture icons, with Huang even being dubbed the “Taylor Swift of tech.” Alvin Nguyen, senior analyst at Forrester, warned that while Nvidia’s leadership in AI has bolstered its position, it also carries risks. If AI fails to deliver on its vast potential, it could impact the company’s valuation. Moreover, Nvidia’s first-mover advantage could face challenges from competitors like Intel, who may eventually erode Nvidia’s market share, though this would likely take time.
