GAF warned over unauthorized guard duties

By: Solomon Nartey Tetteh

The Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has emphasized the need for strict discipline and professionalism among Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) personnel, especially regarding unauthorized guard duties.

During a working visit to the Eastern Naval Command under the One Garrison in Tema, Dr. Boamah stressed that discipline is a non-negotiable cornerstone of the military’s operations.

“We expect a very high degree of discipline and professionalism from the Ghana Armed Forces, and that we cannot compromise,” the Minister said.

He expressed concern about reports of military personnel providing private security services without authorization, reiterating that such actions violate the Armed Forces’ core values. Officers involved will face disciplinary action.

“This discipline also means not providing guard duties for individuals who are not permitted. Those who do so will be dealt with,” he added.

Disciplinary measures will extend beyond those directly involved to include anyone who authorized or deployed soldiers for these unofficial assignments.

“Most of the time, the soldier does not elect to perform these duties on their own. So those who deploy them will also be held accountable,” Dr. Boamah said.

The Defense Minister acknowledged that some soldiers take on private security work after official hours but called the practice unacceptable.

The Ministry is taking steps to stop it.
