Gold Surges to a Record, $3,508 per Ounce

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

The price of gold has soared to an all-time high, hitting $3,508.50 per ounce yesterday, September 2, 2025, as investors flock to the precious metal amid heightened global economic and geopolitical uncertainty. The rally marks a near one-third rise in value since the beginning of the year.

Gold has long been regarded as a safe-haven asset during periods of instability, and its latest surge reflects a convergence of factors that have unsettled markets worldwide. Analysts say the metal’s rally has been propelled by expectations of a US Federal Reserve interest rate cut, persistent geopolitical tensions, and ongoing concerns over global trade.

Adrian Ash, director of research at BullionVault, attributed much of the recent momentum to policy turbulence emanating from Washington. “The rise in gold prices over the past few months is really down to Trump what he’s done to geopolitics and what he’s done to global trade. The US election last year really put a fire under it,” he told the BBC.

Markets have also been unsettled by worries over the independence of the Federal Reserve. President Trump has repeatedly criticized Fed Chair Jerome Powell and even attempted to remove a sitting governor, Lisa Cook. According to Derren Nathan of Hargreaves Lansdown, these moves have “driven renewed interest in safe-haven assets, including gold.”

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde echoed the concern, warning that any erosion of Fed independence would represent a “very serious danger” to global financial stability. “If the Fed were forced to respond to politics, the impact on economic stability in the US and therefore the world would be very worrying,” she cautioned.

While surging prices have traditionally dampened consumer demand in major jewelry markets like China and India, this cycle has defied that trend. Ash noted that buyers in both countries are pivoting towards investment gold products such as bars and coins, keeping demand resilient.

Analysts further point to a “raft” of global uncertainties supporting gold’s ascent, including Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, shifting trade policies that have disrupted supply chains, and inflationary pressures across major economies.

“Gold has found added support from US dollar weakness earlier this year as the preferred safe haven,” observed Suki Cooper, a precious metals analyst at Standard Chartered. With investors seeking shelter from market volatility, gold’s role as a hedge against risk appears more relevant than ever.
