GHS confirms 10 new Mpox cases, total now 565

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed 10 new cases of mpox, bringing the total number of infections nationwide to 565.

The latest update signals a steady increase and reinforces calls for heightened public awareness and preventive action.

Mpox, formerly called monkeypox, is a viral disease that spreads mainly through close, often prolonged, contact with an infected person.

Transmission can occur via direct contact with skin lesions, bodily fluids or contaminated items such as bedding and clothing.

In certain situations, the virus may also spread through respiratory droplets when people are in close proximity for extended periods.

Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the GHS, noted that early detection and treatment are critical to containing the outbreak.

“We encourage anyone who notices symptoms to seek medical attention immediately. Timely reporting enables us to provide care, limit spread and protect vulnerable populations,” he said.

Health authorities are urging Ghanaians to remain alert and to adopt strict hygiene practices. Recommended preventive measures include Frequent handwashing with soap and water or using an alcohol-based sanitiser; avoiding close contact with anyone who shows symptoms such as a distinctive rash or open sores and promptly reporting to a health facility if signs such as fever, rash, headache, muscle aches or swollen lymph nodes appear

Health experts also emphasise that while Mpox can affect anyone, individuals with weakened immune systems, including those with underlying health conditions, are at higher risk of severe illness.

The GHS is continuing surveillance, contact tracing and public education campaigns across all regions to prevent further transmission. Residents are advised to stay informed through official health updates and to avoid misinformation that could undermine containment efforts.
