Breast cancer curable if detected early – Breast Society President

The President of the Breast Society of Ghana, Dr Josephine Nsaful, has reiterated that breast cancer is curable when detected early and treated appropriately, cautioning against reliance on unproven alternative remedies.

Speaking to the media at a breast cancer awareness event, Dr Nsaful stressed that timely diagnosis and treatment remain the most effective tools in saving lives.

“We know, and we have evidence, that when breast cancer is diagnosed early and treatment begins on time with the right methods, not dabbling in alternative treatments and herbs that do not work, breast cancer is curable. We have heard the stories and testimonies of survivors today, and they confirm this,” she said.

Dr Nsaful explained that the Breast Society is intensifying advocacy this October and throughout the year for early detection through regular screening.

According to her, every woman should conduct monthly breast self-examinations, visit the hospital once a year for a clinical breast examination and, where possible, undergo mammography.

“We believe women can start with their fingers by performing self-examinations. Once a year, they should see a health professional for a clinical check. That doesn’t cost much. And of course, we continue to advocate for access to mammogram machines,” she noted.

Dr Nsaful also urged women not to fear breast cancer treatment, emphasising that with the right medical care, recovery is possible. She appealed to government and non-governmental organisations to help decentralise cancer treatment facilities across all regions of Ghana.

“We believe decentralising treatment will change the breast cancer narrative in this country,” she added.
