GSE Posts Moderate Gains Mid-Week Despite Drop in Trading Volumes

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi
The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) recorded modest gains on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, extending its steady run of positive performance even as overall trading volumes slowed sharply. The benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) inched up from 8,628.21 points to 8,634.75 points, reflecting a cautious but sustained level of investor confidence across the market. The day’s uptick also pushed the market’s total capitalization to approximately GH¢167.8 billion.
The movement was notable given the quieter trading environment. After witnessing an unusually high volume of more than 10 million shares traded on Tuesday, activity tapered off significantly during Wednesday’s session. The market recorded just 1.58 million shares valued at GH¢2.35 million. Despite the decline in activity, a number of key equities showed resilience and helped lift the overall index.
Benso Palm Plantation Limited (BOPP) emerged as the standout performer for the day. The stock added GH¢0.81 to close at GH¢46.51, continuing its strong run driven by renewed interest from institutional investors. CalBank (CAL) also posted a mild gain of GH¢0.01, ending at GH¢0.45. CAL was among the most actively traded equities, with more than 1.2 million shares changing hands, underscoring strong investor appetite for financial stocks. Ghana Oil Company Limited (GOIL) also contributed to the market’s upward movement, rising by GH¢0.03 to close the session at GH¢2.88.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) reflected this momentum as well, edging up from 4,495.51 points to 4,500.14 points. Analysts say the improvement in the financial index signals continued confidence in the banking and insurance counters, many of which have posted stronger-than-expected results in recent quarters.
As the trading year draws closer to an end, the broader market continues to display remarkable resilience. Year-to-date performances remain among the strongest in recent years, with the GSE-CI up 76.63% and the GSE-FSI posting an even higher gain of 89.02%. Market watchers note that these gains have been supported by improved liquidity, sustained foreign investor participation, and strong earnings across major listed firms.
Although Wednesday’s lower turnover suggests that investors are adopting a more measured approach in the final weeks of the year, analysts expect the exchange to maintain its positive trajectory, driven by a combination of strong fundamentals and renewed optimism in Ghana’s economic recovery.
