Sports Ministry Rejects Black Queens’ Per Diem Claims

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has rejected claims by the Black Queens that they are owed outstanding per diems, saying all approved allowances due to the team had been paid as of August 12, 2026.

The response follows a statement from the players in which they raised concerns about unpaid financial commitments, welfare and the level of support they received during the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

According to the Ministry, the players and eligible officials received their per diems in advance on July 29, covering July 26 to August 7. A further payment was made on August 11 to cover the extended stay from August 8 to 14 after Ghana progressed to the quarter-finals and subsequently entered the World Cup play-off route.

The Ministry said signed allowance sheets attached to its statement provide evidence of the payments and therefore there is no outstanding per diem obligation to the team.

On bonuses, however, the Ministry acknowledged that the winning bonus from Ghana’s group-stage victory over Cape Verde is still being processed. It explained that such bonuses are paid directly to players and eligible officials after documentation, statutory deductions and other financial procedures are completed.

The Ministry also disputed the players’ claim about an outstanding WAFCON qualification bonus from their qualifying matches against Egypt. It said no separate qualification bonus had been approved under the current sports financing framework, meaning the payment could not be treated as an outstanding government obligation.

The Black Queens had also called for better attention to their mental health, welfare and management support, stressing that their concerns were intended to encourage a more transparent and professional system for handling the national team.

In response, the Ministry said the team has a support structure that includes medical, nutritional, and administrative and welfare personnel, including a doctor, nurse, dietician, chef and physiotherapists.

The Ministry has urged the players to channel concerns through the appropriate institutional processes while reaffirming government’s support for the team’s World Cup campaign.
