2026 Australian Open: I Have a Lot to Prove – Ben Shelton Ahead of Jannik Sinner Match

American tennis sensation Ben Shelton produced a strong comeback performance to beat Casper Ruud 3–6, 6–4, 6–3, 6–4 in the fourth round of the 2026 Australian Open, booking his place in the quarterfinals.
Shelton, who had dropped the first set, recovered impressively to dominate the remainder of the match and secure a crucial victory. The win sets up a mouthwatering quarterfinal clash against defending champion Jannik Sinner on Wednesday, January 28. The matchup promises extra spice, as Shelton was beaten by Sinner in last year’s semifinals.
Speaking after his hard-fought win over Ruud, Shelton said he was eager to build on his previous performance at Melbourne Park and correct the mistakes that cost him last year.
“It’s where I wanted to be, I wanted to be back here,” Shelton said. “I wanted to give myself another shot, I wanted to improve on some things that I didn’t do as well last year and leave it all out on the court.”
The 23-year-old added that he still has unfinished business in the tournament and is determined to prove his worth on the biggest stage.
“I have a lot more that I want to do here and I have a lot more to prove… I will be ready to go,” he said in the post-match press conference.
Shelton is now firmly in contention for his first Grand Slam title, and the upcoming showdown with Sinner will be a major test of his resolve and progress as he seeks to lift his maiden major trophy.
