Wamkele Mene lauds Ghana’s progress in AfCFTA implementation

THE Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Mr. Wamkele Mene, has underscored the critical role of AfCFTA in fostering continental trade, economic transformation, and digital innovation during a recent courtesy call on former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The visit highlights the intersection of leadership, policy support, and the growing potential of intra-African trade under the AfCFTA framework.
During their meeting, Mr. Mene expressed his gratitude to Dr. Bawumia for his steadfast support of the AfCFTA Secretariat during his tenure as Vice President, particularly in areas related to trade facilitation and digital trade protocols.
Ghana has been a key player in AfCFTA’s establishment, hosting its Secretariat and providing the policy and infrastructural backing necessary for its smooth operation.
Business Opportunities under AfCFTA
The AfCFTA is poised to redefine the African economic landscape by creating a single market of over 1.3 billion people and a combined GDP of approximately $3.4 trillion. Central to its agenda is the facilitation of cross-border trade and the promotion of regional economic integration. Discussions between Mr. Mene and Dr. Bawumia highlighted two key areas of interest to businesses across Africa:
- Cross-Border Digital Payments
The digital trade protocol, particularly cross-border digital payments, is emerging as a game-changer for businesses operating in multiple African countries. Efficient and secure payment systems are critical for reducing transaction costs, increasing trade volumes, and enabling small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to participate more effectively in cross-border commerce.
Ghana, under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership, has been a pioneer in digital innovation, including the implementation of mobile money interoperability systems and the e-cedi project.
These efforts align closely with AfCFTA’s vision of leveraging digital tools to streamline trade across the continent. Businesses in the fintech, e-commerce, and logistics sectors stand to gain significantly from these advancements.
- Economic Growth and Transformation
The AfCFTA offers unparalleled opportunities for businesses in manufacturing, agriculture, and services by removing tariffs, harmonizing trade rules, and facilitating access to new markets. With Ghana serving as a gateway to West Africa, local businesses are well-positioned to tap into this vast network, diversify their offerings, and compete on a regional scale.
Strengthening Democratic and Economic Stability
Mr. Mene also commended Dr. Bawumia for his statesmanship during Ghana’s 2024 general elections, emphasizing the importance of political stability in fostering investor confidence. For businesses, a stable political environment is a prerequisite for long-term planning and investment.
Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and commitment to Ghana’s democratic principles further reinforce the country’s position as an attractive destination for foreign direct investment (FDI).
Way Forward for Ghanaian Businesses
The meeting between Mr. Mene and Dr. Bawumia serves as a reminder of the pivotal role Ghana plays in AfCFTA’s success. Ghanaian businesses must now position themselves to leverage AfCFTA’s benefits by:
- Embracing digital trade solutions to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
- Exploring new markets across Africa for export opportunities.
- Building capacity to meet regional standards and compete effectively within the single market.
As AfCFTA continues to gain traction, the collaboration between policymakers, businesses, and international organizations will be critical in driving the continent’s economic transformation. With visionary leadership and strategic investments, Ghana is well-poised to lead this charge, ensuring that its businesses thrive in the emerging African economic order.
