BetPawa unveils $10m initiative to revolutionize African sports

By Christabel Oboshie Annan, Accra

BetPawa, a leading online betting company, has announced a $10 million initiative to promote sports development across Africa, starting with Ghana.

This five-year commitment aims to revolutionize sports sponsorship through programs designed to empower male and female athletes, improve football infrastructure, and support community development.

Chief Commercial Officer at BetPawa, Ntoudi Mouyelo Katoula, disclosed the ambitious plan at a media briefing in Accra, emphasizing the company’s dedication to African sports.

The “Locker Room Bonus,” a standout feature of the initiative, will offer equal pay to male and female football players, providing a 400 GHS bonus to every player on the winning team immediately after each victory.

This programme, starting with female teams in Ghana’s FA Cup, represents a bold step towards gender parity in sports sponsorship.

“We’re investing equally in both men’s and women’s leagues,” Katoula said. “Every player on a winning squad will receive 400 GHS before they leave the locker room. It’s our commitment to fairness, showing that all athletes deserve equal recognition”, he said.

He emphasized the brand’s commitment to promoting gender parity by offering identical bonuses to players, regardless of gender.

“BetPawa’s Locker Room Bonus initiative represents a significant step toward fostering growth in Ghana’s football ecosystem” he said.

He highlighted that BetPawa’s commitment to Ghanaian football and community support goes beyond the Locker Room Bonus, ensuring that male and female players receive equal bonuses—a reflection of the brand’s commitment to equity in sports.

“Looking ahead, BetPawa has ambitious plans to expand the Local Room Bonus program beyond Ghana” he stated.

Mouyelo announced that the company aims to invest over $10 million across various African markets within the next five years, leveraging Ghana’s success as a blueprint for similar initiatives across the continent.

BetPawa is also committed to responsible gaming. Partnering with the Gaming Commission, the company has established Ghana’s first nationwide call center for problem gambling support.

This center, a crucial part of BetPawa’s ethical practices, offers counseling and resources to individuals facing gambling-related challenges.

The initiative recently earned BetPawa the Responsible Gaming Initiative Award at the Gaming and Lottery Awards, underscoring its commitment to player welfare.

Beyond sports and gaming, BetPawa’s “Win Big, Give Back” campaign drives community outreach. This initiative funds social projects such as supplying medical equipment, educational materials, and farming tools to underserved communities. “Our involvement goes beyond sports,” Katoula shared.

“We’re partners in the development of the communities we operate in, and we aim to create a lasting positive impact where it’s needed most.”

BetPawa also announced its sponsorship of Ghana’s Football End-of-Season Awards, which celebrates journalists and media professionals dedicated to covering local sports.

Other Projects

The Chief Commercial Officer revealed that in August, BetPawa commissioned the first phase of the BetPawa Park at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence in Prampram, in the Greater Accra Region.

This project according to him, aims to enhance local sports infrastructure by providing a professional facility for training and competitions, serving as a central hub for Ghanaian football development.

“As part of reinforcing our dedication to Ghanaian football, BetPawa is also sponsoring the Ghana Football end-of-season awards, recognizing the achievements of players, coaches, and teams who have excelled over the season,” he emphasized. He stated that the ‘Win Big Give Back’ campaign has been transformative for many communities, allowing BetPawa to offer support where it is most needed while also promoting responsible gaming.
