The local chapter of the Network of Professional Women in the Maritime and Port Sectors of West and Central Africa (NPWMP-WCA) was on Friday launched in Tema.
The launch was also served as the first official meeting of the chapter, and was attended by about 200 members of the chapter from both the Tema and Takoradi ports.
Past Regional President of the Ports Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA), Esther Gyebi-Donkor, who currently serves as Special Advisor to the Executive Council of NPWMP-WCA, advised the members to strive to be relevant not just to the Network, but in the workplace.
She reminded the women that although there had been a long journey to opening the door for women in the sector, they should not bank on womanhood to grant them an easy path, but rather stand out and be seen as productive presences in their stations.
She told them to “make deliberate efforts to ensure that your presence is felt. Don’t feel entitled to anything, just because you are a woman, but strive to stand out. Don’t be satisfied with being in your corner.”
Gyebi-Donkor reminded the members that the aim of the Association is to build the capacity of its members, so they should be interested in taking advantage of the opportunities available for professional development.
She said, “as a local chapter, you have a lot to do to ensure that every single member is carried along.”
President of the local chapter of NPWMP-WCA, Abena Serwaa Opoku-Fosu, said that the establishment of the local chapter is to consolidate efforts of those who have gone before to ensure that women perform well in the industry excel and receive recognition for their work.
She also noted that the aim of the local chapter is to ensure that there is mentorship for their members, and that they see it as a duty to pass the torch on to those who come after, in the form of mentorship.
She stressed that the goal of the chapter is to ensure that no one is left behind.
The local chapter of NPWMP-WCA was first inaugurated in July during the annual seminar of the mother network, which was held in Ghana
